Featured Speakers
BRIAN ATWOOD
Co-Founder, Versant Ventures
Brian Atwood co-founded Versant
Ventures after spending four years at Brentwood Venture Capital, where as a general partner he led
investments in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and bioinformatics. He also has more than 15 years of
operating experience in the biotechnology industry, with emphasis on therapeutic products, devices,
diagnostics and research instrumentation. Prior to launching his career in venture capital, Brian
was founder, president and CEO of Glycomed, a publicly traded biotechnology company.
"Our business as
VC's is unearthing technology and innovators at the laboratory level, a process that often bypasses
the technology transfer office until it's time to arrange a transfer license. We define the
products and then identify the customers and their demand for the products."
"As a venture
investor, our preference is emerging and early stage innovation, but beyond the idea stage, with
some demonstration of technical feasibility. More than anything else market size, where new markets are being created, envisioning a
large market opportunity, and then realizing the opportunity, is the most important success
factor."
